An electric fence kit for the koi keeper's oldest problem: raccoons and herons treating the pond as a buffet. A low two-strand perimeter delivers a startling but harmless pulse the moment a paw or beak-first wader touches the wire — the kind of lesson predators only need once.

    What's in the kit

    • Fence energizer — plugs into a standard wall outlet (120 V / 60 Hz) and sips about 1 VA, so running it costs pennies a month. 5,000 V pulsed output, 0.1 joule, rated for up to 2 miles of wire
    • 250 ft of aluminum fence wire — corrosion-proof and highly conductive
    • 50 screw-in insulators plus the socket driver tool for installing them

Not included: fence posts or stakes, a ground rod, and a fence tester — plan on adding those from the hardware store. The energizer has two terminals: one to the fence wire, one to your ground system.

The setup that works for ponds

The proven arrangement — recommended by koi dealers and university extension services alike — is two low strands around the pond perimeter: one at about 4–6 inches for raccoons, one at about 12 inches. Set wires at the intruder's nose height, keep the grass under the fence trimmed (vegetation bleeds off the pulse), and a small 0.1 J energizer like this one is entirely adequate for a short, clean pond loop.

For herons specifically, the fence guards the wading approach — but a determined heron can drop in from above, so the strongest protection is this fence plus a cover net during peak season. The two together are how ponds stop losing fish.

    Good to know

    • The pulse is a startle, not an injury — safe for the raccoon, memorable enough that it stops coming back.
    • The energizer needs an outdoor-rated outlet within cord's reach, or mounting in a shed or under an eave with the fence lead run out to the perimeter.
    • Check local ordinances before fencing in a front-facing yard; some municipalities regulate electric fencing, and a warning sign is cheap insurance either way.
    • Switch it on at dusk if you'd rather not run it around daytime garden visitors — raccoons do their shopping after dark.
